potter's diary uk

I have just been to the Potter's Fair at Oxford, England.
I know it is well advertised amongst potters in this country by CPA, Craft
Potters Association, and the regional groups such as EAPA, East Anglian
Potters Association, but do our visitors from the USA and other places know
about it and our other pottery shows, demos and fayres etc throughout GB?

I suspect not. Now that is a great shame. If one of you from the States or
Australia has come to the UK and wants to meet our main potters. There they
are under one roof, but you are probably travelling helter skelter round the
country to find them individually, only to find the pottery shut for the
weekend.

So, I wonder how you would normally find out this information and should the
channel of communication be made somewhat clearer?

Would a Potter's Diary be helpful and if so, how could it be arranged?

Martin,
Not quite sure what you mean by a diary. However...decades ago I spent
years competing in dog obedience trials and I live in an area where the
trials are numerous. Someone came up with the idea of producing a list of
trials, highlighting the more important events. It was initially printed
with a very modest format (typed pages, list form) and sold cheaply and
regionally (upper midwest). It was in much demand and the idea began to
catch on in other places until finally --after personal computers began to
appear --it resulted in a nationally-distributed calendar with datesprinted
that had been sent in ahead of time (of course). It was attractive and more
sophisticatedly produced, complete with appealing dog photos. It was a
hit!

Seems to me that such an item could be put together in your country or
perhaps in all of Britain, distributed there and sent strategically to this
country (say to Clayart). For that matter it would be nifty to have
something of the sort over here, but probably harder to get together.
Still, in this day of computer communication...It just needs the right
person and group to do it. I think it would be of real value and interest.
After all, how many times -- usually 1 or 2 a week -- do we ask one another
what's going on in the art world in an area we intend to visit? I've
belatedly started saving some of the stuff in a "travel" mailbox.

Gail describes what I was suggesting.
An up to date, computerised, list of forthcoming pottery events.

The most logical group in the UK to do that would be the Craft Potters
Association.

They see the booklet of selected potters, giving names and addresses. That
seems to be well known. This would just be a good companion to that,
essentially for the visitor to the UK.

Is there anyone of the office staff of CPA reading this and able to point us
in the right direction for getting such a list on-line?

Martin,
Have you looked at the British Studio Ceramics site?
http://www.studiopottery.co.uk
Or you can pick this up from my 'links' page.
This has a very extensive listing of forthcoming events and is intended
for that purpose as well as giving details of potters. It would make
excellent reading for anyone seeking to know what is on and where in the
UK. Let me know what you think.

David, that was excellent. It's just the information visitors would want.
Glad you have sent that information to Clayart.

All we need to do is make sure that British Studio Ceramics site lists all
that is going on.
But why is it not done by CPA? Odd, IMHO.

Is there a similar listing in the USA, Italy, Australia etc? All we need to
know is one web site per country and click on that when planning our trips
away from home.

The only way this can happen is if someone tells them. Most UK potters'
associations have a programme of events and could keep them informed.

The CPA collects funds from its members to help promotes them. There
isn't a body in the UK to promote ceramics in general. I think it's
great that Studio Potter is taking the job on but it can only tell of
what it knows. So come on all you Brit potters, let us know what you're
doing.
