please research jolly and jigger technology. It is fairly easy
to construct a simple system and it will help him get it to a
more creative point easily rather than struggling so hard with =
centering.
Also, you can use a giffen grip to hold a soft clay construction that
has the "walls" mainly formed and let him "throw" just the rim area.
