Maybe - coarse-ground cullet? Take window or bottle glass, mash it up,
and seive out the fine particles. then seive out the too-big ones.
Take the sand-sized bits (not too many) and mix it into an underglaze
or matt engobe. *CAVEAT* - I just made this up; I've never tried it! :)

Hi everyone,
I'd like to develop my own sandstar type glaze using flat underglazes =
with crystals at 06-04 A while back I think I tried silica sand in the =
mix but it didn't seem to work. Can anyone shed a little light, or =
advise what I could use to achieve the effect. Perhaps a higher fired =
clear glaze that could be fired in a layer of sorts and then crushed =
afterwords.... Although I realize I could purchase the glaze ready-made =
through Duncan, I can not bring myself to become dependant upon a =
company for my glaze, because you just never know what will happen. =
Kind of like gerstley borate!!
I really love the look of the flat glaze with the tiny flecks of shiny =
color and I have a new design that I would like to use this glaze on, =
but I'd prefer to develop my own glaze first. Hope someone has some =
great ideas, thanks,
g.

Hello, I read your post and checked today, at work to see just what the
crystal additive looked `like in our glaze. What I found was a two part
mixture of clear and black glass pellets, slightly coarser than granular
rutile. The clear reminded me of the glass beads that they use to
reflectorize road stripes, check with the local hiway department???
We mix the crystals in with the matt glaze base and brush it on, we use a
commercial glaze from Italy, so the formula is unknown, though the name of
the manufacturer is (I believe) colorabia.
Luck to you!
Tommy
