tennessee woodash report

Craig Martell on fri 3 nov 00

Hi:

Remember the Tennessee woodash I wrote about some weeks ago that may, at
some point, be available thru ceramic suppliers? OK, I was just checking.

I've done some more glaze blends with the ash and have made some very
interesting celadon ash glazes. From the analysis they sent with the ash,
it looks like it could be pine. I keep forgetting to ask them if they know
what species they are burning at the plant. Anyway, I did a Currie biaxial
with 60 soda spar and 40 Tennessee woodash in the flux or "c" corner and
blended in Grolleg kaolin and silica. These are 35 glaze biaxial grids, if
you aren't familiar with Ian Currie's grid method. The grid produced at
least 12-15 useable glazes and in the low alumina-high silica range there
were three very nice "nuka" glazes. The other glazes range from very
fused, clear celadons to opaque satin celadons that are very smooth and
buttery to the touch. I applied dots of copper, black iron, and a
cobalt-chrome mix to one of the sets and got copper reds, greens, and
ranges of good iron colors, and cobalt/chrome teals and dark blues. The
sets were fired at cone 10 R in a propane fueled kiln.

So, I'm thinking that this ash will produce some very nice and somewhat
unusual glazes. It's good quality stuff and I'm hoping that the suppliers
who have been sent samples will give serious thought to carrying this woodash.

in case any of you have been wondering, Craig Martell in Oregon

We don't have chestnut wood available here; but there's plenty of pine, fir,
oak and madrone for sale and periodically we go fruit woods when the local
orchards do some orchard maintenance.
I don't like to burn pine because of the resin build up which can start flue
fires. That' s why I'm excited at the possibility that Craig's ash source is
pine.
Did you mean to write landel ash, or did you mean lavendar ash?

Regards,
June

Craig,

Pine and other softwoods can give nice chuns. I have several chun recipes
from an old Ceramics Monthly article that have around 2-6% soft wood ash in
them.

Regards,
June
