Good friend of mine has been getting requests from people to "mine"
his shard pile. A few questions revealed they weren't actually looking
for "seconds," but really wanted shards. Seems they are into this
hobby-mosaic thing, gluing broken bits of ceramic to birdbaths, flower
pots, cement stepping stones, etc. He charges them $20 to clean out his
pile. Gave me an idea. Why not hammer all those awful pots, sort and
bag by color, and sell as mosaic material?

You might want to re-think this idea.
Stoneware pot shards are sharp!
If you sell something, you are implying that it is safe to use,
and people, especially kids, could cut themselves on your
'product'. A bad PR move at best, and a liability nightmare
at worst.
Remember Dan Akroyd on the old Saturday Night Live?
He was the sleazy, double-knit wearing con man selling
'Manway Bag 'O Glass' as a kid's toy.
I let people who want shards pick them up out of the driveway
(my hammer pots make driveway fill), but warn them that
they are sharp and not intended to be used for any purpose,
and I would never accept payment for them.

Oh, heck.
I've now concreted over most of my shards to form a patio
and the rest are in a pool of concrete slurry to finish the job.
To think of all that money I could have acquired
for the rights to look through them.
It brings tears to the eyes ;-(
