Dolly, I THINK that the shape of the extruder's barrel doesn't matter a
lot to me, but then I've only used the square ones. Maybe I'm missing
something, or maybe it's because I only extrude with dies. The manual
Northstar hung on my wall, more or less abandoned, for a couple of years
before I discovered that my sole problem in using it was the need for
softer clay, not more muscle strength as I'd assumed... wonder I didn't
break it trying to force the clay through. The Northstar has a square
barrel. I use it often now.
Then #1 Support Person gifted me with a Bailey system 3 drive frame
extruder which has a 9" stainless barrel ..... square barrel. Bailey's
comment is, "the barrel is square (instead of round) to allow greater
flexibility in the size and shape of the extruded form. Square barrels
are easier to clean." Note: this is Bailey's comment, not mine,
although I do love this extruder and do find it easy to clean.
I hope this helps.
