kiln ring openings

I have an Olympic gas kiln that I am using currently with 4 "rings". When I
fire there are definitely openings between the rings, and I would think that
could affect the firing. Since I am a beginner, I don't know whether it does
or not! When I shut down the kiln, wouldn't it be good to have some kind of
thermal wrapping to "button" it up to prolong cooling? Or would it fire to
cone 10 quicker if it had a thermal blanket around it? Or is there some kind
of wadding I can use between rings? I would appreciate all comments.

You could cut some fiber blanket to act as a gasket between
the rings. Seeing a glow through the crack doesn't
necessarily mean that you are losing a huge amount of heat
out that way, You just don't have the metal skin to block
what you do see. My gas kiln glows all around the edge of
the door during each firing.
