I am looking for a low fire glaze recipe for a metallic glaze such as copper,
bronze etc. If anyone knows where to look or has a recipe please let me know, I
would be most grateful for your help. Sincerely, John Boalick

You can try this way: to your base glaze: test 5 batches: With an add of 4
6 8 10 and 14 copper oxide. The most beautifull effect is when it is
fighting between green and steel gray.
The last effect can work nicely with a majolica base.
I used is as the "black" after seeing the first time raku, and could not do
it myself, Doing ox. firing, with some "black" parts.

In response to your query for metallic type bronze/copper. If you are
trying to achieve this type of glaze in ox. at low temp. then I think
you'll probably have to try a glaze mix w. silicon carbide. I did
some experimenting a few years back, but it's a bit tricky.

If you want a Raku type metallic bronze then you just use copper carb.
in your shiny low temp. glaze mix with lots of flame then heavy
reduction until cool.

Hope this helps,
Gabrielle

John,
You may want to look at the June/July/August 99 Ceramics monthly article by
Heather Young called Flash Reduction. There are three cone 06 reduced luster
glaze recipes included with two examples of her work. Beautiful!

i like adding 7-10% iron and 1-4% copper to my favorite clear.
it gives me a range of dark patina green to glossy black metallic with dark
blue specks. sct

Dear John,

I recently bought a metallic low-fire glaze
called Antique Bronze. You can fire it at cone 04 and
05. I tried it on Miller 45 clay and it really looks
like metallic bronze! I also fired it on terra cotta
and it looks metallic black. It might even look
better on white clay but I have not tried it yet.
This glaze is made by Duncan, Fresno CA 93727
Their Phone # is 209-291-4444. I bought mine from a
local supplier in Maine. My supplier warned me that
this company will discontinue their glazes without
warning and sometimes only have them on the market for
6 months if they don't sell much. So-oo-ooo..., If
you try the glaze and really like it, you might want
to buy a good supply-just in case.
Hope this helps.
