bob anderson from wisconsin just got his gas/electric
working and fired this weekend. we just talked on the phone.
great firing, good reduction. worked great.
several things he did:
he used the parts from two old skutt 181's. put two bottoms
on the base, and placed a second top on during the firing. drilled
the gas holes 1 1/2 inches.
he took the stainless metal shroud off of an old big kiln and used it as a
wind and heat shield . (he has the kiln outdoors under an overhang.)
bob used a bunsen burner from frye scientific that i got for him. he had
a regulator so used about 4 pounds of pressure. he got the nice
flame from the top. one inch from the peep hole.
he mounted the burner on a fireplace brick by drilling four holes in
the brick and using metal pins and was able to secure it. for the next
firing he is going to mount a metal push rod on the brick to push it under
after lighting. also, he mentioned maybe lifting the kiln up on concrete
blocks...make it easier to line up the burner.
he fired in six hours, cone 11. had nice brown reduction clay color
and his glazes (rhodes 32 melted very well)
he turned the kiln back on at 1800 for about and hour at medium.
so, he loves the little kiln. now, we will see how many firings he
gets.
he is doing pix now.
