I do it at cone 6 sometimes, but I avoid it as much as
possible because it's a pain to do, but when I do it it
works. Don't know about cone 10.

I'm told that I cannot glaze the bottoms of stoneware pieces and use =
stilts, that my pieces will warp. Is this true? I really would prefer =
to glaze the bottoms if possible.

Hello,

In my experience I have found stilting pottery not very trusty. The weigh=
t
does make a difference and many times pottery is much heavier than cerami=
cs.
Our Center has both Ceramic and pottery and I sometimes will use stilts f=
or
small articles that the kids make or a piece that someone dipped and didn=
't
get it real clean, but the experience I have had with it tell me not to d=
o
this on a routine basis.
Another thing to consider is that pottery is or has always been known for=
its
distinction of having the clay show and the footing signed by the artist.=

A good cleaning and waxing for the footing area and a nice glazing over-a=
ll is
the prime taget for many potters.
I have recently heard that many of the potters in NC have started using t=
he
stilting method. My source said it was a way to speed up the process and =
for
no other reason. Used mainly on smaller items. I do know the quality of w=
ork I
have seen there such as from Dennis aka Pitter the Potter has always been=

great! (Dennis Pitter) Great place/person to visit over thar in 'dem hill=
s..

I've fired small items on stilts with success. I've had a big item
warp. I often have students who want to glaze the bottom and use stilts
on their work, and I discourage it. If you do, make sure you have ample
support under the piece, evenly distributed.

Denise in Northern California
unloading a kiln today with some stilt-fired pieces... we shall see what happened!

I fired stoneware on stilts at cone 9-10 as a regular thing for years.
Used the three-point clay stilts, definitely NOT the wire points. For
very large stuff I used large "hershey's kisses" that I made myself.
Necessary to have the stilt at the edge where the wall is, not in the
middle. That is what makes it work without warping the piece.

So go ahead and give it a shot. Sure worked for me. (Of course there
wasn't anybody telling me it wouldn't.)

Best, Eleanora

The wire points can fail pretty easily at that temperature. They'll fail
(collapse) at low temp under a heavy pot.
