hi karen

we have been offering workshops in raku for many years now, at esalen institute,
big sur, calif, and they are well received

our workshops offer a full blend of the raku-yaki process. we go out and dig local
clay;
make a full range of utensils for the japanese tea ceremony; make up local glazes
and fire in oxidation and reduction kilns, particularly black and red raku ware;
also we introduce
wet fire raku and microwave raku techniques.

we conduct a sweat lodge working with clay in the dark and afterwards clay mud
baths in
esalen's hot springs

participants use their raku creations to perform a number of tea ceremonies during
the workshop, building tea houses indoors and out, and take turns serving tea to
each other.

out next raku workshops are: this Dec 8-10; February 11-16, august 25-30 we will
have our third annual workshop comprised mostly of japanese students at esalen;
there will also be a workshop in april 2001 in osaka, japan.

you can view out workshop pictures at: www.mapstead.com/noel

details about esalen and costs are at: www.esalen.org (search workshop and
mapstead)
(sleeping bag accommodations cut the workshop fees in half)
