My sense of glazes is that they are given names
based on:
the creator of the glaze, i.e. Woo Blue was developed
by Marie Woo,
Material name, i.e. Iron Saturate, like a temnoku
A quality/look/surface, i.e. floating blue or various matt glazes.
A friend developed a glaze that he calls
astroturf green, but he has a sense of humor.
I try to give credit to anyone who communicates
techniques or information to me, but that is how
I am. "Oh, I learned this from...fill in the blank..."
My sense is that there are so many published glazes
out in the world that there is no way that I will ever
come close to attempting to learn more than a small
percentage of glazes and their characteristics.
I also freely give formulas, and I find that the firing
is so critical, that I get significantly different results
from those who have been given the glaze. So I do not
feel threatened that they are going to start producing
pots that look like mine.
Also the clay you apply the glaze to causes significantly
different results.
So the variables are huge...and generosity is the way to go.
