is the bisque firing a necessity?

Lately I've been tempted to try letting pieces dry very thoroughly, and =
then simply glaze (applying with a brush) and fire to cone 6. Is there =
a reason to *have* to bisque fire the ware first?

Absolutely not, biscuit and firing was introduced into the commercial
side of ceramics to simplify handling large quantities of wares. Many of
us single fire, it is by far the simplest way of doing things. The only
"must" is that the glaze should be fairly high in clay to enable it to
stick properly. Brush-on glazes which contain CMC will often single fire
very well, the CMC seems to replace clay very well for this technique.
