Sorry, but I lost my note about who asked for recipes using Laguna Borate as
sub for Gerstley. My testing is going slowly, but I had success with two
recipes. Results were excellent with Alisa's Waxy White, which she got from
M. Selsor. The Metallic Black recipe from Lana Wilson's Ceramics Shape and
Surface did not turn out exactly the same as with GB. Tests were done on both
white 182 stoneware clay and 112 brown stoneware at Cone 6 oxidation. I
tested both on flat, smooth and upright surfaces with texture and there was
no running or crawling. (I did notice when I mixed the little batches with
the Laguna Borate it is sort of bubbly and airy at first in the container.)
Here are the recipes I used. I hope this is of help since I am new at this
testing process. Waxy White : GB
/LB 20, Neph Syenite 30, EPK 13.3, Whiting 9.4, Talc 17.4, Silica 10,
Zircopax 15 Metallic Black: Flint 25, Spodumene 50, GB/LB 25 plus you
add Bentonite 2, Red Iron Oxide 3, Cobalt Oxide 3, and Copper Carbonate 4.
This Black recipe came out with more dull spots in the finish than the
Gerstley version, but try it because it may give a finish that you are
looking for. When I copied the black recipe she said you can substitute
colemanite for the GB, but I don't have that ingredient yet.(Sorry I can't
list these ingredients in the usual format, but there is something I don't
understand about this keyboard today.)Off to the studio to glaze mugs for
Christmas gifts. TONI SMITH
