THE ART AND CRAFT OF THE TEAPOT:
A 5-DAY WORKSHOP WITH PETER PINNELL
This five-day workshop's intent is an intensive investigation of the
practical and aesthetic possibilities of the teapot. We will make tea, drink
tea, pour from teapots, think about teapots, talk about teapots, look at
teapots, make teapots, and generally spend the week considering the teapot's
potential as a work of ceramic art. We will make, bisque and take home both
whole teapots and assorted teapot parts. These pieces should be considered
"sketches" for finished pieces that you will make later. Pinnell will
demonstrate a wide variety of ways to make a body, spout, lid, and handle:
some on the wheel, some off of it.
Please bring a willingness to explore new ways of thinking and working, and
leave behind any desire to make a finished masterpiece. We will spend a
couple of hours on one of the final days in a "glaze doctor" session where
we can discuss the technical aspects of pottery finishing, however we will
not have a glaze firing. This workshop is best suited for intermediate
and advanced throwers and handbuilders. 25 lbs.of clay and all bisque
firing are included. Peter Pinnell is a potter, teacher, writer and
lecturer. He made his living as a potter for twelve years before becoming
an Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1995,
and has continued to exhibit widely since then. His work has appeared in
exhibitions through out the US and abroad. Images of his work have appeared
in several noted ceramic books and magazines, and Pinnell has been an active
writer on ceramic matters with articles in numerous American and Australian
journals. Pinnell is also much in demand as a workshop presenter, having
given over a hundred since 1989.

PUSH - PULL, FOLD - BEND: A WHEEL THROWING AND HANDBUILDING WORKSHOP WITH
JULIA GALLOWAY
In this 2 day hands-on weekend workshop we will focus on creating new ideas
for work and then determine the techniques to support these ideas. Galloway
will share her own techniques through throwing and handbuilding
demonstrations, and she will lead discussions about the aesthetics of
pottery and the processes of creative development. We will do individual
and group projects about making and also spend some time addressing surface
decoration and glazing methods. Intermediate throwing skills are required.
Please bring two finished pots of yours for discussion and 50 pounds of your
clay of choice. Bisque firing is included. Julia Galloway is currently the
assistant professor at the School for American Crafts at Rochester Institute
of Technology. She received her BFA from Alfred University and her MFA from
the University of Colorado in Boulder. She has led numerous workshops and
exhibited her salt-fired porcelain pots nationally. Galloway was also a
demonstrator at NCECA 2000 in Denver, Colorado.

IMITATION AGATES FROM POLYMER CLAY:
A WORKSHOP WITH JEAN COHEN
In this one-day jewelry making workshop, we will explore a new way of
working with polymer clay. We will layer varying thicknesses of opaque and
translucent polymer clay. Some layers will be tinted with color and some
painted with acrylic paints. Then we will stack and compress the various
layers to create a block of imitation agate. From this we will make pins,
beads, pendants and earrings. All materials are included. Techniques are
appropriate for all levels of experience.
