all cracked over cracked platters

I just successfully fired an 18" platter, my largest so far, and for the
bisque firing, placed it on 3 round discs that mostly covered the kiln
shelf. My reasoning was that the platter could shrink along with the discs.
This platter happened to be made of clay with a lot of grog in it, so it
might have been ok anyway. I also was worried about it cracking in the
glaze firing, so sprinkled a layer of grog on the shelf before placing the
platter, and it was fine. I have had cracked plates and platters before,
especially using Laguna's B-mix. I will follow Cindy's advice next time and
wedge in some grog.
