digital to slides

Cindy,
Even at 3.3 Mega pixels that is only about 24% of the information on a
35 mm slide so I am afraid that you might not be happy with the result
when it is projected. Also the point and shoot variety does not take
in much light due to the small lens size. Wait just a bit, as I have
heard that there are al kinds of new digital cameras coming out of
Japan, and some with 35 mm size bodies and lenses for less than $2000.
Those cameras used to be $10,000 and $15,000.

Does anyone know of a service to take my digital photos and turn them
into slides? I have practically given up taking anything but digital
photos, and now one of the shows will only accept slides. (Bummer).

BTW - I live in Maryland, if that makes any difference.

Try contacting Visual Horizons, 180 Metro Park, Rochester, NY 14623, (716)
424-5300, on the 'net at http://www.btb.com/vh...I dealt with them a lot years ago
and they could make slides out of anything a computer could spit out...would bet
they can do it for you...good luck!

Sandy - loving whifferdillies!

Dear Clayart Friends,

Well, this mommy will have her MFA this December( whoo hoo!). I have
been gearing up for a job search.
While some of the positions available accept digital images, some still
require slides. While I could take slides (as I have in the past), I
now have a nifty digital SLR which takes absolutely beautiful images.
At this point, it would be much easier (timewise and frustrationwise)
for me to take digital shots and have slides made from them. Any input
out there? I have talked to the folks at
http://www.coloradocamera.com. They do originals for $2.00 and copies
for $1.00.
Has anyone used these guys? Any suggestions of other companies?

Also, to anyone who has used digital images for a job search , did you
use a particular program to organize the images on CD? Powerpoint?
Whatever?

Thanks in advance for your help,

I've used comparable local companies. Whether going
from digital to slide, or vice versa, it's obviously
going to depend on how "tight" your original is.
I've used slides made from digital images and sent
them to oppurtunities that said they wouldn't take
digital in any form. They never knew the difference
-even when they used one of them to blow up to a
poster size (which, of course, they had to convert to
digital to do...). Keep in mind that my photographer
uses a really high end digital camera. The # of
pixels in these digital images represent 2-3 times the
"grain size" (forgive, that's probably not the right
term) of 35mm film. I have older digital images that
can hardly be used to do a slide show on a small
screen without "pixeling out", because they were taken
with a lesser camera. In comparison, I've seen my
current ones blown up on a 50 ft. movie screen with no problem.

lori - your local wedding photographer might have the equipment around. as the old timers grow, they too switch to digital yet understand the value of slides.

and some of these wedding photographers have weekday jobs doing industrial photgraphy requiring exactly what you need as well.

see ya

Sandy, Jesse, Steve and Chris, (hope I did not miss anyone, I am
working off of two computers):

Thanks to all for your replies and suggestions. Clayart is the best!

I have been using a Nikon D-70, which has given me nothing but superb
images (after a bit of a learning curve) I keep a laptop with me when I
am shooting , and I can see the results immediately, which helps me
fine tune my lighting, apeture and exposure choices.
For years, I used a homemade setup with a gray formica sheet, (learned
that from mel) built a homemade light box, used small strobes and got
decent results. This year I got the EZcube setup after seeing it at
Linda Blossom's in Ithaca. ( http://ezcube.com/ ) I am SO pleased
with it. For my larger installation type pieces, using digital has
allowed me to photograph them in place, using the white balance
feature. I am still fine tuning those images, working on different
angles and height, to come up with the best representation of my work.

Slideplus ( http://www.slideplus.com/ ) sounds like the most
economical solution for slides from digital, especially if I don't need
a rush job. I think I will give them a try with some test images before
I commit. I will also get in touch with Slide.com. The website says
they will match prices. Of course, quality is the most important, I
would rather spend a bit more
if it means I get better images. I will keep the list posted on results.

One thing, though...in an off list email, Louis Katz brought up an
issue.. many search committees may not accept slides from digital
originals because of the potential for image manipulation. I'll have
to check on a case to case basis. Any input on this?

Also, I am still looking for the best way to present digital images on
CDs. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for the help,
Lori L.
