Dear mary Beth;

Try a book by Amaury Saint-Gilles, called "Earth'n'Fire", Shufunotomo Co,
Ltd. In this book the author lists and gives short descriptions of 113
pottery sites/towns, all keyed to maps. Third printing in 1981, so may be
quite out-of-date; but the author had a gallery in Tokyo called the Gallery
Upstairs, featuring excellent japanese work.

I am hoping Lee or Russell or one of you can tell me if a book including the
following discussions exists. I am interested in finding a book about the
characteristics of the clay in different regions of Japan and the styles of
work that developed out of that. I was lucky enough to have a brief visit to
Tokyo some years ago. It was a most enjoyable introduction but I have wanted
very much to go back to see more of the country and of course the pottery
regions. Think I shall try to link up with a group at some point. Anyway, I
saw the books listed but aside from Cathy Davidson's I have read none of
them. Want to ask for something for Christmas so thought the above question
might help me make a selection.

Thanks,

Mary Beth

Ohhhh. You mean Amaury Saint-Gilles' "Earth 'n' Fire; A survey Guide to
Contemporary Japanese Ceramics" published in '78 by Shufunotomo Co. Ltd.
It's a bit out of date but a really wonderful little guide, if you can find
it. It's been out of print since '78. Too bad it was never updated. I found
my treasured copy at Foyles in London (favorite book store).

There is one copy in good condition for $15 on the Abe Books site. Search
for Saint-Gilles.

He also has another book called "Mingei Japan's Enduring Folk Arts. Many
more copies available. Can any one recommend it?

Does anyone know more about this guy? Earth 'n' Fire is such a great guide.

There are also lots of other books around about particular styles of pottery
(styles tend to be regional but that isn't necessarily so now). Dan Rhodes'
"Tamba Pottery". Kodansha published a series on Shino, Oribe, etc. I'm sure
Steve can recommend more.
