little stop signs in my glaze

My 5 year old asked me why my falls creek shino, when it dries, makes "those little stop signs". I have been wondering myself; perfect little hexagons of various sizes appear on the surface as the glaze dries. Just the same shape as the silver rivets on my evenheat kiln. What the heck are they? Anybody?

Yours, Kelly in Ohio (Suspecting once again that I should have paid more attention in all those college classes I thought I would never have a use for)...

P.S. did some pottery with the folks at the local retirement center, and the aides were amazed how they just "came alive"! They made interesting pots and had a lovely time, although a woman named Gloria had to be reminded several times that it was clay, not chocolate...

Dear Kelly;

Please tell your five year old that the high clay content in that glaze
carries more water than usual. When the glaze coat dries, the clay has to
adjust to the volume of water that is leaving, and it does this in a
hexagonal pattern just like when the bees make their hives__close packing.
or in this case, close unpacking! Tell your five year old that he/she had a
good question. now a question for him/her from me: what makes them little
or large?
Cheers! Hank in Eugene

Geez, Kelly.

Fascinating. Falls Creek Shino? I wonder if they could be iron crystals? I
wonder if one could get them to survive the firing? Now, *that* would be
cool.

What is in your shino?
They are probably soda ash crystals, but I don't know what shape soda ash makes.
