Thanks for all your help with this. I think I may just turn to a less
groggy clay for these pieces. Once the Christmas rush is over, I'm
planning give my studio a really good cleaning to get rid of the
brown stoneware dust on everything, get some porcelain and start
experimenting. Any advice for one who has barely touched
porcelain before?

Chris,
Not advice so much, but a possible warning. Porcelain can become "addictive"
for some. It is so nice to work with, but it tends to have more of a mind of
it's own than stoneware. I think the secret to throwing porcelain, is to
throw with as little water as possible. I have got the best results when I
used the slip made from centering that I just pick up on the wheel head as I
am going along, or the splash pan. And the glazes over that white clay are
so luscious. Start out small and work your way up in size.
