I forgot the type of frit...
It calls for 3134, but I use my local frit, which Ababy showed me
looks nothing like the above, but it works for me! Clear,
not too shiny glaze. One of my heros in the studio.

Best regards,
Alisa in Denmark

Alisa:
In Ron Roy's satin clear what frit did you use?

Thanks, Clay

The show will not be cancelled,
'Will we ever find a good cone 6 clear?' is just being
replaced with 'I'm being taken for granted'.
Watch out, Dear Abby and Dr. Laura.

Interesting and likeable about this frit for me is that it tends to smooth
out glazes, although
sometimes it does make them glossier than the original receipe. I have
recently tested numerous
receipes that call for G.B, with this frit as sub, mostly in the glazes
where colemanite
sub. failed (made glazes too dry or matt). This frit melts at 700c and is
listed as a
raku frit, as Ivor correctly observed when seeing the analysis.

I just unpacked a kiln with this frit used in Ron Roy's satin matt.
Everytime
I use that glaze and it works like it does for me tonight, I say many thank
yous
to Ron. The satin matt is semi gloss than can go all gloss if fired to
high,
but usually, like today, has the exact surface I want, a clear semi gloss.
I say semi gloss, not semi mat, because it leans more to a gloss with some
shine,
but not glassy. In the firings I have made, I have seen this glaze as a
true transparent
matt with some milkiness if really a heavy drip or overlap, to what I have
today 70/30 mat/gloss,
to a shiny gloss when the kiln fires hot.

I am satisfied with this glaze, so as far as "As the Wheel Turns", will we
ever find a
good cone 6 clear? David, cancel the show for the next season, the glaze has
been
found at least in one studio.

Best regards,
Alisa in Denmark

Hi Alisa,

I have worked out the analysis for this frit so others can duplicate your
results (if they have calculators) with other materials and frits.

There is quite a difference in the fluxes between frit 3134 and your 169
but when I sub it equal amounts in a glaze calling for 20 frit 3134 the
results are similar. Looks like it will melt about the same temp but has
more boron and sodium so I am not surprised to see the extra melt with some
glazes. Alumina and silica are similar.

When I sub it in for a glaze with 20% GB the alumina and boron are the same.

So I now understand why you are getting similar results with this frit.

Using calculation software I can get much closer in terms of ratio and
expansion by adding some MgO and reducing the KNaO (reducing the feldspar)
and then getting the alumina and silica the same - in fact I am surprised
how close I can get them.
