I just wanted to share our good fortune here at SE. Last month the TCC
Board of Trustees approved the bid and contractor for our new ceramics and
sculpture/3-D design studios. According to The TCC Collegian:

"In other business, the board selected a local contractor to build the new
SE Campus Art Complex.

With the recommendation of Richard A. Jaynes, principal at VLK Architects,
the board chose Prime Construction Company to do the addition.

The firm's bid of $ 1,464,770 was $ 108,230 lower than KMJ Contractors, the
next lowest."

It was a once in a career experience working with the Art department
coordinator in preparing the proposal for a new facility to the campus and
District administrations, working with the architects in designing the
space, and having the board approve of the plans.

When complete, the Art Complex will have three adjacent studios totaling
approximately 9900 sq. ft. The ceramics studio is 60' x 46', the kiln yard
is 60' x 42', and the sculpture/3-D design studio is 60' x 77'. In
addition, there will be a 165' x 20' yard behind the studios enclosed by an
8 ft wall.

The bulldozers have been at work the last couple of weeks. The slab is
supposed to be poured soon. The complex has a completion date next summer.
We hope to offer classes in the new space Fall 2001.

Dear Rafael,
That is really wonderful for you. It is great to see investment into new
facilities.. a rare thing on many campuses where the 'distance learning"
courses are taking president over the "in the flesh" classrooms. Congratulations.
