Don
previous advice about clay body is on the money.
You should not have to go to great lengths to make or dry a good flat
tile.
Some of the lowfire smooth earthenware bodies commonly
available will have you gnashing your teeth if
you try to make tile with them.
If you cannot find a claybody designed for tile specifically
try a sculpture body or a raku body that is open , has low shrinkage,
6 - 10 per cent, and one that will mature in the temp range you want.
Also don't start with very a wet, wheelthrowing consistency in your
clay.
finally, how thick are your tiles?
Many commercial tiles are 1/4 inch thick or so.
Our field tile is1/2 to 5/8 inch thick when fired.
