Tougaloo Art Colony proudly presents " Beyond Handles: Creative Extruder
Use" , a David Hendley Workshop. The workshop will be held on the
Tougaloo campus on January 13th and 14th 2001. Classes will start at
9:00 am and run until 4:00pm each day. The cost of the workshop is
$100.00 which will include materials.
This workshop will demonstrate three broad areas of using the extruder:
extrusions as additions to thrown pieces such as handles, feet and rims;
extrusions used as components for hand-building forms and hollow
extrusions that make vessel forms with the addition of tops and/or
bottoms. We will also design and make some extruder dies.
David Hendley owns and operates Old Farmhouse Pottery in Maydelle Texas.
He has written many articles for Ceramics Monthly and Pottery Making
Illustrated magazines. David says, :"The hand extruder has been a common
piece of equipment in college ceramic studios and potter"s workshops for
decades, but it is still rare to see this tool used extensively or
creatively. . . When I use the extruder, in most cases I do not want the
finished product to look extruded. . . Success for me is when another
potter sees something I've made using the extruder and can"t figure out
how it was made.
We are limiting this workshop to 30 people so that you can participate
and get hands on experience.
Tougaloo College is located at the intersection of I-55 and County Line
Road in North Jackson, Mississippi. There are numerous motels in the
area with prices ranging from $36.00 to $80.00 per night. This is a
large shopping area with a terrific mall and many interesting shops as
well as lots of eating places.
