substitution for lithium

Hello Diane in CT,

I've had concerns about lithium in glazes on functional ware and have been
using strontium instead, as suggested by another potter (maybe on Clayart?).
So far the glazes have all worked fine (using 3/4 as much strontium). I fire
to ^6 in an electric kiln.

I'm also wishing for a glaze calculation program, some of Phillip's fine
tools, and more time to work! (Santa, are you listening?)

Mary, I'm astounded that 3/4 as much strontium carbonate substituted for
lithium carbonate is giving you the same results. Or is it that they
just "work fine" rather than working the same? That "3/4 as much
strontium carbonate" rule (actually, it's usually 70%, but close enough)
is the substitution for barium carbonate, not lithium carbonate. Barium
and strontium act somewhat alike in glazes, but lithium is a completely
different animal.

Hi, Mary, That substitution, 3/4ths as much strontium, has been touted
here as a substitute for *barium carbonate*. As far as I knew, one would
have to do glaze calc. to really figure out a sub. for lithium. But
maybe we now have a new use for strontium.

Mary,
Are you serious? Strontium as a safe substitute for lithium?
