propped lids on kilns

If work is well made and well dried, there's no need to prop the top =
open on an electric kiln. I fire a small gas kiln outdoors and prop the =
top open as a temperature control; when I try to candle the kiln it =
either blows out or, with the lid closed, gets too hot (over 150-200 F). =
I only prop the top for 1-1.5 hrs. to ease the work through water =
vaporization.
