Dear People.

We are looking for formula's of slips for the saltoven that pull on =
(draw) salts and that discharge (repulse) salts.
Who can help us find them.
Can anyone also explain how they are used.
I am very curious if anyone can help us with this difficult problem.
Wish you all a merry Christmass and an inspired new year.

Greetings Cor Duijnker, Member of Ceramic workgroup Holland.

Wow! This one brings back some memories!
In undergraduate school I did a whole mess of testing on the same topic!
I found that by adding alumina hydrate to the slip, the salt would not build
up on the surface of the piece.
I used the following slips:
Reitz engode
60 Kaolin
15 Potash Feldspar
15 Flint
10 Ball Clay

and
Smith's engobe
30 Potash Feldspar
30 Ball Clay
20 Flint
15 Fire Clay
5 Borax

I started with 100 grams of engobe dry in 10 cups. Cup 1 got +5 grams of
alumina and cup 10 got +50 grams alumina.
Memory says that cups 5-10 with + 25 grams alumina to +50 grams were the
most successful!
Good Luck!
Chris

CorDuynker,
If you go to the archives there are pages of salt glaze slips. You use
them brushed onto the greenware to be salted. You could possibly dip or
spray. No glaze is needed.
Follow the way to the archives under the info at the bottom of the page.
One thing, where it asks for dates you must use numbers not words.
010296 would be Jan. 2 96. This info on the salt slips may go back to
96, I can't remember.
Good luck,
Marcia
