Hi Ned and anyone else who is interested,

I read somewhere sometime ago, that if one mixes a little baking soda into
vinegar, it is very good for joining leatherhard clay, mending cracks in
greenware and so on. What I do, is take some vinegar and put it in a little
bottle with a couple of pinches of baking soda. Sorry, I do not have exact
amounts, as just add a little, sort of like my cooking! It froths up, as
you mentioned but, as long as you do not put in too much, that's fine, and
it should froth, as then you know you have enough in there!

For joining, I score and apply the mix to both scored pieces, then score a
little again, so it goes in well, and join the pieces together the usual
way.

For mending greenware, I add some powdered clay from the same body to the
mix, so I have a slip, and then fill in the crack, or if it is a join that
has to be made, I soak both ends in the mix, then score, apply the slip,
and join. I cover it very well, check it constantly to see how it is doing,
add more of the slip if necessary, and then, if it is a join, I do paint on
wax to slow the drying.

Hope this helps.

All the best.
