high humidity drying

Hello,

I suppose the bait is pretty good so I will bite as well since Chris Camb=
ell
took a nibble in an earlier post.
But besides the humidity factor wouldn't the enclosure need a vent as wel=
l
since you are using heat?
I really love to use B-MIX both the mid-fire and high-fire. I also have m=
ore
than my fair share of bottom cracking when I am working at our Center. =

In my own studio I have glass enclosed drying racks that hold moisture mo=
re
evenly. Covering the tops at our Center is another problem. It seems to h=
appen
more with casseroles than with plates? I like to wait till the piece pops=
off
the plastic bats and is still leather-hard, I trim and set it on a wire r=
ack
with a light plastic cover on them, I tried turning up-side down as well.=

Cracks no matter what all too often.
Any advice on this would be appreciated. Maybe I can build a drying syste=
m as
you have described.

William

William, describe the cracks you are getting.....are they "s" shaped? That could
be from insufficient compression during the throwing, rather than a problem in
drying. If that is so, you might try giving attention to minimizing the water used
while throwing, making sure to well compress the bottom, try throwing "back towards
the center", and also compressing the underside after trimming. Hope that helps.
