Someone, probably from Clayart or from Quaker-B has put the following
leaflet into my letterbox this morning.
"Specific strategies for dealing with difficult people at work:-
HOW TO HANDLE PEOPLE WITH TACT AND SKILL
coming soon to your area
Never again fall victim to those who love to make life miserable for the
rest of us...
You will learn why they act the way they do.
You will find out exactly what to say and do in specific situations.
You will become less of a target for their barbs and antics.
You will see how to bring out the best in even the worst offenders.
Attend this seminar and gain the communication skills you need to
'de-stress' all your difficult relationships, on the job and off.
This is a day of intensive training with immediate payback ...
Learn to take the offensive against know-it all, dictators, snipers,
gripers, 'yes' people, 'no' people and all the other contrary characters you
confront every day."
The person concerned must have braved the cold and the newly fallen snow to
reach me with this very personal message. Come on own up, whoever you are.
I know I desperately need this course run by www.careertrack.com but at 61 I
think it is a little late in the day. What am I saying? I have always tried
to change something about myself everyday. So a little extra change
shouldn't be that difficult. I'm almost talking myself into taking the
course ... but not, there's too much to do in the pottery, getting out all
those mugs and cat bowls.
Thanks all the same, whoever you are, but you will have to put up with my
direct plain speaking and just understand that it is all said with love and
best wishes for the new year to you personally, my friends the animals, and
the planet.

Martin, You do not need it, but I DO!!!
I plan to run down there now and brave my hard-earned on this class.
Having to deal with about 500 people per day makes it =20
a MUST
However, you get to save your cash for some nice new
handmade decorating brushes, and I will tell you what
transpires in the course,
(naturally, I jest as my paycheck certainly won't allow,
however much I need this pop psychology boost!

Here's my solution: let your 5-year old talk to the Jehovahs Witnesses,
let your five year old talk to the telemarketers, and speak plainly and
gently to everyone else!

Dear Martin
It was not me.
I enjoy being less than perfect . The world can not be any other way.
I am writing to say that I never did a course or read a self help book that
could not be preside as Try harder.
I have never met a group that was not made uncomfortable by a few poignant
questions and most of its members looking for hangover cures.
I expect the post was made by someone who was instructed to spread the
E-word as part of an exercise in the course they are following.
It Is a good trick that one, it means that he student makes an investment
which reinforces the program. Does brain washing remove all dirt.
This lesson has been learned after the acquisition of several t-shirts.
However I shall still search for the golden key - its fun as long as you
keep light hatred .
What "Quaker B" is it a nonconformist church or a new computer game.

Ps. I have just eaten my favorite dinner of the year - Spiced beef, pickled
cucumbers, roast taties, and salad. We are snowed in. We spent the day
playing in the snow and still have loads of un eaten christmas goodies. So
my reply is some what influenced by a perfect day.

Sounds like a revamp of "How to make friends and
influence people". Anyone remember that slim
volume? I presume I only got as far as the
preface, considering the number of people I
manage to upset!
But don't worry Martin, you are not alone. We
are in the same boat... It is a communication
and cultural problem, as Paul T. and I agreed
some time ago.
We apparently have different sound bytes and are
on different wavelengths in the UK. Say
something in a direct and forthright manner to
an individual or a group elsewhere and many (not
all) jump to the conclusion you are making a
personal attack or being anti->whatever<. They
think you dislike not only the single >whatever<
but the whole country or continent where
>whatever< is made, found, from or practised.
Therefore a complete >whatever< country hater!!
Don't even think of commenting on those
perennial taboos: religion and politics!! There
are a lot of people just aching to take offence,
without these adding fuel to the inferno. I
suppose it is all part of the rich embroidery of
life, but it can be extremely tiresome.
I hope the course on offer came from someone who
has recognised the error of their own ways and
just wanted to share!
"Good slip" everyone!
= Literal translation of "Guten Rutsch", the
German good wish for seeing in the New Year.
Which reminds me I have got to go and inflate my
lucky pink pigs... One or two fewer each year...
Originally had forty covering my workplace on my
40th birthday. Now THAT was a sight... 40 pink
pigs... Not elephants mind... PIGS :o)

Paul Taylor asks
It is the equivalent of Clayart for Quakers in the UK.
We are gradually getting more and more quakers to enter the 20th century by
becoming computer minded, just like in Clayart we are getting more and more
potters to use computers.
It is a computer game? Well, it certainly becomes part of life. It can be
addictive. We do joke on it. But we also have times when a little more tact
and skill would be helpful.
My postings there, just as on Clayart, are often lacking in the latter two
qualities :-)
