Happy New Year!
We use plaster bats at school. Not much trouble with plaster in
recycled clay. Almost none (I am saying that so as not to jinx
myself). we also have particle board bats and Masonite (hardboard)
bats as well.
If I were making plaster bats I would put in some (10 - 15%) Gypsum
cement to make the bats harder. We use pie tins with motor oil
release. Take a Stanley Shurform file and bevel the edge to prevent
chipping on the edge. I have seen some plaster bats with metal inserts
for pins. I suppose that you could put hex nuts in at the right places
so that the plaster won't pound out over time (I have some aluminum bats
that are 3/8ths on a inch think and the holes pounded out to bigger a
size.
