england trip-suggestions anyone?

Pamela and all other intrepid visitors to our
shores...

It may appear as a little island off the coast
of Europe on the atlas, but when only visiting
for a week or two you must first decide where
you are going to concentrate your attentions.
And when posting requests for information on the
UK (England, Ireland, Scotland and/or Wales)
please say where you plan to arrive (which
airport) and where else you are headed?

Most visitors over-estimate how much time they
have and how much they will be able to travel
around. With the best will in the world, we
cannot list all of interest or possibly of
interest without some lead... Imagine if we
asked for information on the whole of the US
when we really only have 10 days based in NY or
LA... See the problem?

Travelling around and finding accommodation
takes time... More time relatively speaking than
in countries like the US where you can hop on a
plane. Winter months are even more problematic
because many guest houses, studios and other
places of interest close down or are only open
at weekends.

Ceramics Monthly is not going to list much on UK
events. I recommend you get Ceramic Review
instead. This is by no means comprehensive,
because their deadline is quite long. (Adverts
for February would have to be sent by October).
But it is a place to start.

I don't know, but seminars need booking some
time in advance. They are also more of a
summertime exercise. Classes? Well what sort?
Anything vaguely to do with clay or something
more specific?

Asking a question of "some of you Brits" is like
a search on the net... The more precise the
question, the better the response.

The only tips I have without more info on where
you will be and what you are interesting in,
are:

Fire & From: a free guided tour of the
exhibition with the curator Martin Ellis
06-Feb-01. Phone the Education Dept. of
Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery 0121 303 2834
for details.

British Museum, London on 12-Feb-01 for a Korean
Pottery Handling Session with gallery curator
Jane Portal. It costs £10 and you should check
availability and book a place by phoning 020
7323 8511

You could take a whole week out and go to live
and work with potters such as

Seth Cardew in Cornwall
http://www.wenfordbridge.com
Marek Donaldson in Devon http://www.moley.uk.com
Deborah Baynes in Suffolk
http://www.potterycourses.net

"February fill-dyke,
black or white"

Yes, February is going to be wet, even in a
"good" year. The ditches and dykes are either
full of water (black) or snow and ice (white)
according to old country lore... So bring an
umbrella for towns and good waterproof gear for
country visits.

Have a good trip!
