traffic in london

updated sat 13 jan 01

Well, I don't know what others are accustom to, but I am intimately
familiar with traffic in Boston, Los Angeles, NYC, St. Louis, and Nashville,
and I don't think London is all that bad. When we were there last January
my
son Morgan was driving, and he is a good driver. I worked the maps, and we
got around efficiently, even during rush hour. I would not hesitate to do
the same again, but I certainly have to agree with Janet about the dangers
of being unaccustom to driving on the wrong side (sorry) of the road.
Morgan does not own a car, but had driven friends' cars periodically, and
had already lived in London for six months when we visited last, so he was
already accustom to the aberrant driving practices (sorry).

That said, for anyone contemplating visiting London, the underground is
wonderful, comfortable, efficient, prompt, so why drive if you do not need
to?
Best wishes -
- Vince

I agree with Vince that public underground transportation is better than
driving whenever it is possible.
It is also faster in cities like London, Barcelona, Paris, NY, Boston,
because you avoid all the traffic above ground.

the aberrant driving practices (sorry).

re: abberant driving practices: Is England the only place where this
occurs, or is USA the only place where driving is on the right side of the
road? Having never been outside the US I have no idea...

Now look here! Let us have an end to all this "wrong side of the road"
stuff, there are very good reasons for riding/driving on the left hand
side: in the days when all (or nearly all) men carried a sword, it was
customary to ride on the left, the better to defend yourself (most
people being right handed). the practise of riding on the right was
merely an anarchic reaction by those who couldn't stand the British
always doing things for the right reasons. OK? :-)

The only thing, watch for the random pickpocket on the tubes. I never fell

Steve,

Sword fighting on the public roads has been outlawed here in the US for quite a
number of years. Perhaps it's time you Brits did the same :o)

(Of course that doesn't stop people in LA from using other weapons!) :o)

O.K., you can keep your swords. I figure Americans
drive on the right so we can fire our automatic
weapons out the driver's side window, and prop
the barrel on the side mirror! :)

See you on the road! -Snail

The same has been the case in the UK for some while. However, I think I
would prefer trying to run away from a sword, than an indiscriminate
shower of bullets! :-)

Yes well,
After awhile you get used to the bullets. I hardly notice I'm dodging
them any more. You only have to replace the glass in your car once in
awhile!

Seriously, you non-north american people don't believe avery thing you
see/read in the media and on TV or the movies do you?
