Graig,
Thanks for that information. Reminded me that the information you have =
give is provided in severa other sources.
I sometimes wonder about the promotion of fast firing techniques. What do =
the really achieve?
I now fire with gas at pressure settings which are one third to one half =
the original values I used when first firng my small gas kiln. This has =
necessitated an adjsutment to the area of the fire ports and needs a =
little more activity controlling the damper. the firings take longer but =
there seems to be about a twenty five precent saving in gas consumption. =
I would like to put the cylinder on bathroom scales and measure the =
weight of gas used in both bisque and glaost firings.
I am certain that the best qualities of both clay and glaze cannot be =
achieve until all of the materials in a recipe are dissolved. At the =
other end of the process, control of cooling, either to ensure a =
transparent glaze or to initiate crystals should be controlled.
Perhaps fast firing and crash cooling mitigate against these qualities. =
They may also explain the popularity of Gb and frits in glazes =
recommended for this technique.
It may produce a good commercial quality product, but do those results =
excite the Artist within the Potter?
Best regards,
Ivor
