HI All,
I'm going to NCECA for the first time in 5 years. How is public
transportation in Charlotte? Does anyone have an opinion as to
how frustrated a carless person would be at NCECA? I have a bus
tour spot reserved, but remember MANY exhibits scattered around
town at the last NCECA I attended....

Jennifer,

Unfortunately, nowhere in NC is NYC or Philly. Public transportation in the
form of BUSES is there, but you will be happier if you have a car.
Downside: Parking is as high as $15/day in some places. :(

Jennifer: I went to Triple A to get a map and a tour book. I am flying in and
then renting a car. They also gave me a handful of other literature about
Charlotte and the area.. I just got the brochures yesterday so have not
really looked at them too much. One thing not to miss are the Mint
Museums--both the Art and the Crafts -they are separate.. Great collections.
The shuttle buses are a wonderful way to see many things and spend what time
you want then go out and wait for the next bus.

I have not investigated but I would imagine that their Convention Bureau is
equipped with all kinds of maps and literature about Charlotte and would have
a web site or an 800 number. I'm not sure how much driving around Charlotte I
will be doing but will if someone helps to'co-pilot' or backseat drive..

You sound as excited as I am about going!!

we live and work in charlotte, been here about 15 years. Public
transportation is VERY lame. very disappointing for a city this size (i've
lived all over the world) One of the failures of the community.

if you can at all swing it, rent a car, maybe not for the whole time, but
for a day or two to go see exhibits that are away from the convention
center. downtown is very small, the "arts district" is about 5 miles north,
and not walkable (I have also walked all over the world, one of my favorite
means of transport...once did a 15 mile loop of Paris in one day...) The
Clay national is about 25 miles south of Charlotte, and the different shows
are scattered all over. we have no trains, and the buses are iffy at best.

Our studio and gallery showing is about 5 miles south of downtown, and on
the bus route...by the regular schedule it is about a half hour ride, and at
least a half hour between buses during commuter hours, maybe 1.5 outside of
commuter hours.

most car rental places around here are have a $20/day, free mileage deal.
Check with AAA if you're a member.

good luck.

Jennifer

I will have my car there but more than likely it will stay parked in the hotel
garage. 80 % of what you want to see will be on one bus tour or another. I have
only been to Cleveland and Denver, went several places by taxi less expensive,
especially if you share, no parking fees and quicker because we didn't get
lost, and by simply standing in the hotel or convention center lobby and saying
that you want to go to where ever out loud and then saying anyone want to share a
cab, you would be surprised to find a lot of takers.

I am guessing that the taxi situation will be okay, the bus in cities in NC have
always been few and far between.

I will use my car for side trips a few days before and a few days after.

also I run searches and call for info about areas. usually I call on an 800 #
and when I talk to people at the visitors centers I get maps and more info than
you can shake a stick at. ( I reckon that my accent which has faded a bit , after
30 odd years of living up north here in MD will come back when I drive over
the border below south hill
