O.K. Tony, you sent a post that I have to reply to. I absolutely
agree with everything that you have said.

Cold turkey quitting the weed. Quit once for 10 years. Quit dozens
of times since for 1 week up to 1 year. Right now I am up to a week.
Geez it is hard.
But coffee. I can tell you one thing that that is something I will
never be able to do. Not for all the teapots in china.

And yes, it doesn't make sense, all the precautions one makes in the
studio, and then to smoke. But it is an addiction. And if you are
addicted, you can always find an excuse to do it. Wish me luck, and
get after Crawdad will you?

Meticulously loose Liz,

I also felt I had to reply to this one! Hang in there Liz! Quitting is
no easy thing.
Not that I am thinking of it, mind! Life in dear old South Africa is far
too damn scary for me to even think of giving up an addiction that
keeps me calm. My rationale being that I don't have much chance
of making it to a ripe old age anyway. Murder, rape and general
mayhem being our National pastime and fastest growing sport.
So it's tea and ciggies for me though I do draw the line at flinging
toxins into my glazes so I have SOME redeeming features.
Toni in hot and humid Durban, where I see more razor wire and
fortess type homes every day.

toni in south africa ... i'm using the same rationale here in the states.
kudos to those who quit gracefully, but i will enjoy my short time here
making pots, eating heartily (read just about anything tasty), drinking the
"evil" spirits, and lovin' whomever i choose. there is a lot of "razor wire"
everywhere in some form or another. cheers!

the number 1 killer in Canada is ciggies. the surgeon general gives a warning on
every pack.Hundreds of thousands die a painful death every year. Has fear turned
people away from the weed???? they ought be as frigtened as a fat dog on a Korean
life boat.
I have heeded my favourite weenies suggestions about masks, manganese, ash,
silica, blah, blah, blah.
Ciggies kill more potters than bad studio practices.
I joined a health club in August because i was puffing like an old steamboat.
Breathing is much better now. tomorrow I give up coffee after over 40 years of
high test heaven. this whole toxin thread started that thinking. I'm going to
have headaches. I know that. toxins are going to be leaving my body and I'm going
to be spitting nails for a week. Up till now I thought cold turkey should only be
in a club house sandwich..
When you realize that your health is all that keeps you in business, you think
twice about foolishness- diet, exercise, smoking, and studio practices.
If I live to be 80 I'm going to take up smoking and coffee again. Shit, I might
even have a coffee, a brandy and a ciggie at day break.
cheers,
tony
Now if i could only get Loose Liz and Captain Crawdad to stop puffing on the ole
smooley-olies. Interesting how as time goes by, the son becomes the father.

I went to see a pulmonary doctor last week, so I could
have specialist look over my lung X-rays and breathing
test results. I just wanted to make sure there were
no signs of lung damage from my dusty occupation.

After seeing the nurse, I waited in the examining room for
the doctor for about 30 or 40 minutes (this is not a bad
thing; this doctor was in no hurry and obviously gave his
patients, me included, all the time they wanted with him).
Anyway, the walls were like paper in this office, and during
that waiting time I heard the doctor and the nurse talking
to several unknown and unseen patients.
They all had 2 things in common: smoking and breathing
problems. I was the picture of pulmonary health at this place.
This doctor would be out of business, or practicing in another
area, were it not for cigarettes.

Of course, some people seem immune. My college professor
smoked 2 or 3 packs a day and, for fun, would slap the
filter of the heating system, sending fine clay dust throughout
the room. Back there in the dark ages, there was not a single
dust mask in the ceramics department.
Today, he's in his 70's and still going strong.
I've tried to smarten up, since my education was sorely lacking
in the area of health and safety, but in general 'lifestyle choices'
are more important to one's health than studio practices.

You can tell that kind of person from a quick Iris Diagnosis. The iris in
these people is of very fine straight lines, close together. That is the
kind that intrepid explorers, the James Bonds of this world, the Pioneers
etc had. Very few people have that kind of constitution now, and they are
even fewer amongst those who are sensitive to artistic concerns.

The big problem is that those people, in all walks of life, can give others
a very bad example, by just following all their bad habits and showing that
it hasn't physically hurt them.

So, let's be aware for the most susceptible people who may enter our
studios, and especially ourselves. Reasonable precautions all the time.
Cough, cough ...
