Mayssan,

The exact same thing happened to me, right after I signed up
for cable modem. What I had to do, was go back into the
control panel and delete all my other phone book entries in
the dial up connections. After that it worked fine. I had
left the other dial-ups because I planned to go back and
check my e-mail on the other servers until I ws sure
everything got switched over.

I have windows NT, and the dial up connections are located
someplace screwy, and I can never seem to find them when I'm
looking for them. I have to go to "Find Files and Folders"
to find it.

Dear clayarters:
you are always the best to turn to in times of frustration.
I have been trying to update my Norton antivirus through live update. But I
keep getting a message that my computer is not connected with a modem when in
fact I am connected with a cable modem.
It says check connections and retry so I do and when I retry it gets stuck
for a long time with the message connecting to ...in Eugene Oregon but never
actually get connected, Any ideas? Please?
Thanks a lot for any help you can offer.
Mayssan
It is not totally off topic since I need a virus free computer to keep from
infecting the list :)

Mayssan, since I recently went through a similar situation I suggest you call
your cable operator to come correct the connection. That advice you will
probably get from most others as well, but I also wanted to tell you that one
of our computers acted like that (couldn't find the modem) with a virus.
Norton eventually quarantined the virus and their program fixed the problem.
It was in a file called "dwarf 4 you.exe" You may want to call Norton if you
can't get help from the cable folks. Good luck- we really don't need the
frustration that computers bring to the plate.

Mayssan,
I solved this problem for me by uninstalling Norton's and re-installing.
