Metchosin Int'l. Summer School of the Arts presents a Spring Workshop,
"The Aesthetics of Stoneware Forms and Single Firing", with
STEVEN HILL of Kansas City, Missouri
April 21-22, 2001 -- 10am to 4pm
at Lester B. Pearson College,
Victoria, BC Canada
"Being a good potter requires continual development over a lifetime. You =
can't make the same pots over and over forever, no matter how good they =
are. Inevitably, they will either evolve or lose their vitality, even =
though you won't always see changes from day to day or even month to =
month."
Steven Hill has been a functional potter since 1974, working out of his =
backyard studio and selling his work mostly at art festivals. Steven's =
pottery has been profoundly influenced by two trips to Italy. "It wasn't =
the Majolica pottery that Italy is famous for, but the colours and =
textures of Tuscany that spoke to me. The weatherworn painted wood and =
stucco surfaces which highlight architectural form by stripping away =
surface embellishment have found their way into my pottery. I've been =
using mainly textured matte glazes with contrasting colours on rims, =
handles and feet to accentuate form".
Steven has been single-firing his functional stoneware for over 25 =
years. Although at times frustrating to glaze raw pots, he finds it =
encourages directness and spontaneity in his work.
This workshop will take place at Lester B. Pearson College, 650 Pearson =
College Drive, Victoria, BC. Cost is $110. Can. (Friends of MISSA =
