Sadly, I am afraid that some level of ignorance of specific processes is
always filtering into art history. As one who has taught Art History, Art
Appreciation, Ceramics, and Sculpture I am amazed at how little the
traditional texts offer in the area of sound technical information.
If you are looking for texts which offer better answers, allow me to suggest
the following:
Marilyn Stokstad
ART HISTORY vol. 1 and 2
by Prentice Hall
ISBN 0-13-082581-6 (vol. 1)
ISBN 0-13-082582-4 (vol. 2)
and
Living with Art
Rita Gilbert
McGraw Hill
ISBN: 0072859342
Both of these are superb texts with tons of general information about Art
History and the techniques which made the art possible!
Best of Luck,
Chri
