I wouldn't swear to it but I'm fairly sure that the black foam =
stuff is the result of silicon carbide shelf deterioration. we used to =
put kiln wash on the top of the shelves and it only happened on the =
bottom.....If you would like to see a lot of it all you have to do is =
soak for along time after you add the salt....It is probably related to =
your trouble reaching temp.....We once filled the whole bottom shelf =
with that stuff.....Some might like it I guess but not me!
