cone 7 in the kiln sitter?

If I am firing to a cone 6 and use a small ^6 in the sitter the sitter shuts
the kiln off before the controller says it's ready. USING A CONTROLLER I use
a small ^7 or even a ^8 in the sitter to allow the controller to fully fire
the kiln. I'm not sure what that says about the accuracy of small cones, but
that's what I have to do.

Bobbi - that's what the little set screw on the drop block is for - to
accurize your sitter. My Sno Industries kiln fires a cone high, but I know
it, and I'm too lazy to do anything about it. I just drop down a cone if I
think I need to.

Hi Bobbi,
I had the same problem. I checked and adjusted
the kiln sitter release claw and no longer
have the problem.

Directions are in the operating manual.

I have one of those little metal templets that fits into the sitter to adjust
it. I did that. Do you mean that isn't enough? I will check out the little
set screw though and I appreciate the info. TNX.

The template is only good as a rough guide, to get the thing into the
ballpark. Kiln sitters are not necessarily installed at exactly the same
location every time, and due to kiln geometry, sitter variations, and
element shrouding (to say nothing of shadows from the pieces themselves),
don't receive exactly the same radiation as some other type of kiln.
Additionally, the two fulcrums that the pyrobar sits on and the rod itself
change dimensions with the number of firings. I'd go ahead and run a couple
of tests with small cones (guard, witness, etc), roughly loading the kiln
with the same thermal mass and piece arrangement, then making minute
incremental changes to the drop bar per the results.
