freebies from artists

On the same subject---
Musicians often take it in the neck too! My husband is a jazz pianist of
some reputation. He often gets requests to do freebies and as a matter of
fact does some of them when the cause is right (Save the Rain Forests, art
events, etc.). But sometimes the requests get out of control.

On one occasion when asked to play for nothing at some posh fundraiser, he
finally gently inquired: "Now let's see...will the waitstaff be paid for
their work?" (Oh, yes, of course) "And what about the electricity and
water...are they free?" (Well, no.) "And what about the sound system
people..are they contributing their time?" (Uh..no.) "Now let's see...is
the food being thrown in for nothing?" (Well, no, it's costing us a
bundle.) "And are you getting the use of the building, rent-free?"
(Er...no)
Etc. ETC. Finally the woman looked sheepish and (to her grace) admitted:
"I never thought about all these things. I very much see your point!"
Unfortunately, many people don't get the point in either music or art.

Gail--
Thanks for this post. I was in the position of trying to solicit jazz
musicians for just the same sort of thing. I told the people at my church
that these musicians don't work for free.

Same thing goes for donations of pots.
