Dear Melinda,
I also dig up yellow ocher, dry it, screen it and get it as fine as =
possible with a mortar and pestal. It is one of my favorite colorants =
for both glazes and slips. I use a 10% concentration in a white gloss =
glaze.. It produces a orangey brown stripping throughout the white =
base. Very natural in color. In slips it gives me a brown, although =
lighter than red iron. You can also mix it up with water for a wash or =
mix it up with rutile and ball clay for a sort of slip like paint. =
However, as it is an form of iron, make tests to see that
it does not make your glaze too runny.=20
