<< Nan Smith is
curating the large scale ceramic sculpture/ installation show in Charlotte
(I'm embarassed I can't remember the name of the show, but it will be on the
tour) >>
The installation exhibition is titled, "Beyond The Physical :
Substance, Space and Light". It is in three galleries on the University of
North Carolina - Charlotte campus : The Rowe Arts Gallery, The Storrs
Gallery, and The Cone Center Gallery. The staff and students involved with
putting this over whelming exhibition in place did a wonderful job. Nan
Smith (U of F) and Joan Tweedy (UNC-C) have spent countless hours in pulling
this exhibit together. I hope all NCECA attendees will make it a point to
see this great exhibition of installation works.

>I received my MFA in ceramics from U of F 2 years ago and I'm still in the
>Gainesville area. There is only one campus. The graduate department is
>growing. They are a three year program with 10 grad students in ceramics
>this year. Besides Nan Smith, Linda Arbuckle, and Matt Long they also have
>Keith Smith (Large sculptor/installations)as studio tech. and Ovidio
Giberga
>(sculptor) as adjunct. They have an active potter's guild that brings in
>3-5 visitng artists a year for workshops. They try very hard to offer TA's
>to as many grad students as possible and encourage grads to apply for
>different grant and fellowship opportunities. They are a friendly bunch
and
>will have a table set up at Nceca again this year. I would encourage you
to
>talk with as many of the students and faculty as you can find. Nan Smith is

>several grad students have work in the student show. I'd be more than
happy
>to answer questions about the program or pass on the names of some current
>grads.
>The best way to find out about a program is to go visit.
