Greetings: does anyone know how to make air dried or oven dried clay? I don't have a kiln and the commercial clay cost is prohibitive. Thanks a lot, Connie cjacobs@iopener.net

Hello Caroline !
I can give you these recipes, coming from the book of Jorge Fernandez
Chiti (Argentina ceramist) "Curso de escultura ceramica y mural).
He mixes up clay and cement : recipes in parts (not in weight) :
red clay 8 8
sand 7 4
portland cement 5 5
bricks powder 3
you can add pigments or coulourants.
Dont prepare a large quantity of mix in the same time : it dries quite
quickly
I hope it will help you.
Sincerely

Is this recipe safe for hands? Anyone with experience in using such a
product? I would love to have a good air-dried clay for classroom use with
kids.

Heck no, this recipe is not safe for hands, it's 25%
Portland cement. If you handle this for more than
a few minutes you will have alkali burns. Jennifer's
and Jason's mother will have your hide if you give
this to their little darlings at school.
If you used fire clay rather than red clay in this recipe,
you would basically be making a castable refractory.
