Dear Joyce
Because so many share the name Williams, Jones,
Davies, Roberts, Evans, Owen, etc. in Wales, we
differentiate between people by adding the name
of the house, the town, the profession or job
and/or some physical attribute.
For example, John Chwilog is actually John Jones
who comes from Chwilog, but who lives in
Criccieth. In his hometown of Chwilog, he is
however referred to a John Criccieth. To add to
the confusion, he was also known at work (in a
third town) as John Bach, which means Little
John :-)
Iwan Bala is a well-known artist in Wales. His
real name is Iwan Roberts, but he adopted Bala
as his professional name. Bala is the place
where he grew up. It is also an important town
to the people of Wales historically and
spiritually.
I therefore suggest you sign yourself - Joyce
