Evan-

While you are in Pasadena, you might want to look at some of the Craft
Movement homes designed by (I think) Green & Green. One of these have been
donated and is now run as a park there in Pasadena. I went there once, really
quite an experience... I think there is also the possibility of getting on a
tour to see some of the others in the area.

Thanks for the tips, Vince. The asian museum is nice enough but I think
the one in Seattle is much better, as is San Fransisco's. I like the
Norton Simon, too. I hope to check out the Gamble House.

Evan -
Michael gives good advice. There are a number of Green and Green homes in
Pasadena. Green and Green was one of the premier Arts and Crafts Movement
architectural firms building houses around the turn of the century. The
home Michael refers to is the Gamble House, built by Mrs. Gamble of the
Proctor and Gamble fortune. As I remember, she went abroad for a year and
had several hundred craftspeople working on the place in her absence. It
shows. There used to be extensive grounds, and it is a shame most of the
land has been sold off over the years. But it is a treat to take the tour
of the house, and they have a nice gift shop there as well. The Gamble
House is owned and administered by University of Southern California. I am
not positive of the location, but it seems to me that it is on Orange Grove
just below the 210. Several other good things to see in Pasadena are the
Asian Museum and the Norton Simon Museum. And if you get a chance, drive up
to the head of Lake Ave. in Altadena and take the 5-mile round-trip hike up
to Echo Mountain. You'll get an extraordinary view it the smog isn't bad.
Best wishes -
- Vince

Vince's mention of the Greene and Greene houses in Pasadena reminded me of
other things there. The gardens at the Huntington Library complex are one
of my favorites, esp. the Japanese garden and house. It was even worth
bringing my 93 yr. old mother in law there in a wheelchair (and
good-puff-puff-exercise as well). And there is Frank Lloyd Wright's Millard
house --Mayan influence with concrete blocks. I made an architectural
pilgrimage there while out in Pasadena but haven't found it lately.
Perhaps someone has an address for that one. I still have not found any
guide to all the architecture in that city. Haven't tried any historical
society, but Huntington Library shop and bookstores don't have anything
like that. Cheers from snow, sleet and freezing rain country here half way
between NYC and Montreal.

Evan,

When you go to the Gamble House, visit the gift shop. You will find maps of
the neighborhood which feature other Green & Green designs and some rather
good knock-offs. In addition, tucked away is Frank Lloyd Wright's
delightful "La Miniatura."

I hope this is not too late.
MOCA is only 20 minutes from Pasadena.
The Contemporary Museum...
If you make it there, have lunch in Japan Town,
or aka Little Tokoyo, and stop by
Little Tokoyo Clayworks, on San Julian and First...
Also check out the annex to MOCA, which is the Geffin.
Also check out Santa Monica, which is the general region for
contemporary work....Burgamot is the gallery cluster with
a lot to see.
