It is just possible, you know, to accept thoughtful criticism without
assuming that it is a personal attack, and without attacking the person
who generously responded to your invitation to look at your work/website.
Name- calling is boring.

They don't, indeed.

Amazing. Truly amazing. You are the only person I've heard of who can
"tell clay what it will do". Even Val Cushing, even Don Reitz, Cynthia
Bringle - none of them seem able to do that. Even Jim Dine says that of
his drawings, perhaps one in a hundred is good.

.....art does not come from your intellect or your skill, it comes from your
heart
> That is something all our academic friends have lost in the shuffle

While I would not precisely describe myself as an academic, I DO teach,
and I HAVE studied in schools and outside schools. I rather resent your
assumption that I "do not know where art comes from" simply because
I have studied art. And I certainly make every effort not to use
"gobblegook" words.

.....worked to nurture that connection to the universe....Now that I do
art full-time I must be getting close to being declared a saint.....

Somehow I'm not convinced. You know, it is possible to compliment
another (in this case Tommy and his bowl) without casting ourselves
in the same light. It does seem to take some of the sincerity out,
when each compliment is conjoined with "just like me". Makes it
seem less of a compliment to another, and more of a self-congratulatory
and self-aggrandizing tirade. My opinion only, of course.
But I admit to being heavily influenced by my Cherokee grandmother,
who taught us early that demanding admiration seldom got us any.

Dannon must be one of the kindest persons in the world. I have been to
Artimators site, and I see nothing to waste electrons on. She gave you the
benefit of having reviewed it, without fully giving it its due.

I , to my shame, have been there twice. The second time was to see if, just
maybe, I had missed something the first time. Nope- it was, as one of
Artimators own earlier posts said- Bad-Bad- Bad. I have seen Dannons work-
Mels, many others on this list. I have known many artists, including quite
a few artists in clay. Artimator just doesnt have it, and, does not
understand that he is not really very good, despite the claim to being
Americas only full time artist.

The site itself includes some of the classic mistakes- blue letters on a
black ground- links that go nowhere, etc. As a venue for showing work, it
falls short. The text is just puff- (blowing your own horn, etc) I have
read several of his posts, here, and deleted many, unread. His opinion of
himself is really outstanding.

If I give the impression of being irritated with Artimator (Artimater ?)-
yep- it's so. I have seen too much good work to think the attention being
given to him is worth the effort.

Bill- letting his years show, still on Persimmon Hill. (and- loving

Bill....

I think you summed up, quite well indeed, what many of us on the list have
felt since Artimator made is appearance.

I too went to his site and found the pots amaturish, boring, poorly
photographed, should I go on? I'll not comment on the other stuff.

Not only is the site poorly designed, but between his posts to Clayart and
the verbage on the site, I do concur that he is rather overly full of
himself.

I really don't have time to get involved in his rants and I too use the
delete key on his posts. I do think that it would be interesting to meet
him in person.

Thanks again for articulating what I felt, and I am sure many others as well

Best

Tony, etal

Your post makes kilos of sense.

The quiet ones are too exhausted from the rigors of their creating to have a
gram of energy to fight. This statement goes both ways, both good and bad.

Good God,Who the hell do you people think you are? I have felt for a while
that this list is degenerating and now I'm pretty darn sure of it.My
language would be much stronger here if it weren't a public list. There are
some people's posts who I always read and Artimators are among them.They
keep an otherwise long and repetitive session at the computer interesting.
Lately my delete finger has been getting a workout . Joyce ,Vince,TomBuck
,Janet ,Dannon ,David ,Tony and all of you who have shared your time, I
think this may be my formal goodbye.Personal opinions that regress to
insults do not belong here,or maybe I'm wrong.Maybe personal insults are ok
here and I don't belong.So what if the guy is full of himself? Can you
honestly say that you are not? At least he's up front about it.The only
other thing I can politely say is watch what you have to say about others'
work and know that there are people out there who could say the same about
yours. Shame .

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Picasso said (as best as I can remember): "I can do anything the
art tells me to do."
When art is just an expression of Ego, we are aiming too low. The
higher purpose of the Artist is to become a vehicle for the Muses.
Egotistical art won't be remembered for long, except to mark our miss-steps
along the way. Expressions of universal beauty and truth endure and are
understood in every time and every place. Even if they don't always make a
lot of money at the present time.
Saw the Jomon and Yayoi show at the Tokyo National Museum on the
weekend. It is probably the best exhibition of Jomon ever shown.
The work was stunning. It is amazing to think that this was the first
pottery ever made. I cannot surpass it. I can only endeavor to reach
the same place that the creators of this work did. You can read about the
show here:
http://www.tnm.go.jp/doc/Guide/Dyn/eten/eten09.en.html
A friend of mine who viewed the show with us said to me, "Where in
nature did they see these designs?"
I pointed to my head and said, "Up here. These folks were in
touch with something that we've divorced ourselves from."
My wife added, "I think it was something they ate." And when
we came across the white clay Jomon mushrooms, she and I said at the same
time, "This is what they ate." :^)
Dear Pamela
I Think you have read the situation wrong. Artimater has been courting
these responses because he knows that there is a high profile place on this
list for him if he does so.
He has stuck his neck out so far as to be the one to break the great taboo
of not being negative about any bodies work. He was good enough to use his
own work . The "Kick ass" pottery claim was the set up for this.
As far as I am concerned that's fair enough it is part of the dynamic of
any group - eventually.
If you have a beef it is that the group has descended into this . But I
think that is an inevitability as the list forms a hierarchy the only way to
get your face known is to be outrageous. Most other positions have been
filled . Even I am playing a part - but why not- the plot will go on with or
without my participation. I may as well have a bit of fun as well.
Artimater does not even have to fictionalize to get his name across all he
has to do is rock the hierarchy of views threaten the status quo and the
worshipers will be more upset at his irreverence than the apparent inner
circle. That inner circle that exist whether the inner circle like it or not
it is just group dynamics.
Unlike others he has not won his position (notoriety) by hard work. This
increases the annoyance and thus augments his position as the convenient
unpleasant minority group - the cola that no one admits to drinking. If he
did not arrive sooner or later we would have created him. We tried with
others.
It would be nice if Artimater's style did lead us to question the hidden
and open agendas of the respected but he is now a minority group the angry
opposser of the motion that the center of the group need to bring along the
rest.
I view it like a good play even when you know the plot you can still enjoy
the acting. You could join me in this attitude. You miss out on the anger
buzz but you get to feel very superior.
Pam and Art: You know I gotta agree with Pam. I think Art has been done a
dirty deed with this public critique of his work. If you have a bad boy in
class you take him aside and speak your mind. doing it in front of the
class only makes matters worse.
Beware of the quiet ones!!!
My oldest brother was a street fighter. His fun on a weekend was to get
into a fight or two. He and I had nothing in common and in fact I have seen
him once in over 30 years. Here was his advice to me about fighting. Beware
of the quiet ones. those that talk loudly are the ones you want to have a go
at. they are usually full of shit and will fall the quickest. the quiet
ones are capable of ringing your bell.
Are you listening, Art????
Many mothers have probably given their daughters the same advice. Beware of
the quiet ones. the ones that talk a big line about sex go home with the
Palm sisters.
there are many on this list that lurk, offer suggestions once in a while and
quietly make nice pots. It is those people that have thrown the best
punches at me and they're the ones that have helped me deal with rage,
passion and tenderness.
It's those quiet pots that I keep around the house. they're not in my face
but they keep challenging me to look more closely at them.
hope this makes a gram of sense.
cheers,
Tony
P.S I found out where my clay was going. shiela has always made t-bowls.
Pamela -
Shame? You say that Artimater's rantings and ramblings keep you
entertained, and you appreciate the variety, but we are not suppose to speak
up when he irritates us? You say "At least he's up front about it." and yet
you condemn us when we are up front about our reactions to his posts? What
kind of double standard is this? He gets to be rude and obnoxious and no
else can respond in kind?
This is a vital, productive, and stimulating discussion list, and far more
civil than most discussion lists on the Internet. If you belong to any
others you know what I mean. In general, when Clayart members react to a
post or or speak out against something or someone, the language is MILD in
comparison to many other lists.
As others have recently suggested, why not use the delete key? Why are you
even READING posts which bother you?
I hate to see anyone leave this list because they do not like the tone of
some posts. I especially hate to see you leave the list because you have
contributed a lot over the years. But don't try to tone down the list.
That is a mistake.
Best wishes -
- Vince
I have to agree in part here; I have felt increasingly uncomfortable at
the scale of people bashing recently. If you cannot say anything nice
about someone do you need to say anything at all?
We all need space/leeway/tolerance.
