Personally I am forever grateful for the invention of my "porcelain
throne". Life without it would really stink!!

yes, industry is making some amazing things of clay.
a couple of years ago, national geographic did a story on
what is being made.
flexible knives, sharp as can be.
stove top cooking pots.
parts of rockets.
transistors.
(i cannot make any of those in my stoneware kiln.)
but, do people on the list have stories of other amazing things that
are made of clay?
please tell us.

Yes, ceramic engines for automobiles. Japan at least has
them, there'll likely be a big struggle to get them into
general use, but they work, and well.

Rocket engine nozzles are produced by the folk potters in Thailand. Of course the
rockets are mad of Bamboo or more recently PVC pipe. The nozzles are thrown. The
rockets are as we say, "way cool"..

Mel,
I don't know that this is very amazing, but it is a little
unusual. My husband is a chemist, and I've made "heater"
tubes for some of his lab experiments.
I make a cylinder of stoneware clay (about 2" ID and 10"
long) and wrap cord around to impress a nice even spiral up
the outside. Then add a lug to each end and fire it to cone
6. No glaze. Then, he wraps nichrome wire around the tube,
attaches electric stuff, and wraps it in insulation. Then,
he suspends the "sample" in the center of the tube and heats
it to about 1000 Celsius.
He can order commercial porcelain tubes from laboratory
supply houses, but they're expensive, and he likes mine
better because they have the spiral up the side (which
allows evenly spaced nichrome wire), and the lugs to secure
the wire at each end. Also, mine last a lot longer.

Mel,
I am in process of having a porcelain cap placed upon my tooth or what's
left of it.
I find most dentists make wonderful sculptures, tooth shaped and fitting
perfectly, but, never to be seen.
(No wonder they have the highest suicide rate)
My dentist is Chinese and named....Doctor Felice Au. :>) True story.

The tips of Exorcet missiles are made of clay.
A type of porcelain to withstand the heat.
It is turned (rather than thrown) upside down.
They are Made in Ireland.
Exported to France for assembly.
Not all uses of clay are honourable.
