I'm going to be in New York and Long Island for several days starting this
Saturday. Does anyone know of clay-related exhibits that are current? Any
info would be appreciated. (Sorry about the short notice.)

You should definitely check out the John Elder Gallery at 529 West 20th
Street, 7th floor. You can check out their website before going to find out
for sure what exhibits are up. It is a great space and always has high
quality shows. It is housed in one of those gallery buildings so you can
just ride the elevator to the top and start down through each floor...looking
at as many or as few of the other galleries as you are interested in.
Garth Clark is another good one to check out. Once you get to New York, pick
up a gallery guide and that will tell you what shows are up where. Have
fun...I am jealous...and even in winter, the beaches on Long Island are great!

I've been to the Dai Ichi gallery and it is incredible. it has many
contemporary japanese pots and some american. very high dollar. i've heard
that the greenwich house pottery is good, there is the garth clark gallery.
that is all i can think of at the moment. get a gallery guide when you get
there and look for ceramics. ky

I believe the american craft museum has a good one on now. Social
causes in clay, or something like that. It's on 53rd between 5th and
6th.
There's always the Garth Clark gallery (57th street) and Nancy
Margolis (Bway in Soho), which are both exclusively clay. Also, the
Jon Elder Gallery in Chelsea focuses on craft, but often has an
interesting clay show going on.
Also, check out the Asia society and the Japan society, for ceramics
of that ilk.
of course, there's also the Metropolitan Museum. eternally under
construction though. =20
If you're looking for some art that is not clay related, the Brooklyn
Museum of Art has a wonderful (albeit controversial) exhibit focusing
on African americans, photography, and the photographic image. The
BMA also houses one of the nicest ceramic collections in NY. =20
have fun.
